Google have in the past refused to comment, but speculation from the blog report hints that a team formerly of the There.com fame, are working on the world presently.
Very interesting and combine this with Google earth, maps and sketchup, and you are very close to a virtual world. The next three years are going to be exciting with regards to who emerges as the leader of a web metaverse. If we look back at the growth of internet search engines, for example, you might remember Open Text, Lycos, Web Crawler, Excite, Alta Vista, InfoSeek, and HotBot...where are these engines today? They all were early pioneers in search and they all got hammered by late-comer Google. In many emerging industries it's often difficult for the founders to competitive. Will Second Life be able to ride the virtual wave or will a new player change the industry over-night?
CEO Bass Of AutoDesk Ate Lunch With Linden Labs
This story is huge...AutoDesk is a huge company grossing 1.5 billion a year and they have a large portfolio of engineering software products, especially 3D. If you have heard of 3D Studio Max and Maya, then you have heard of AutoDesk. Check this story out! This means that very high end design tools could be used in Second Life sooner rather than later. This is massive in terms of what can and will be produced in world. This is also huge for businesses that will be looking for reasons to prototype virtually. I can't stress enough how important this step will be for Linden Labs. The creative potential will be enormous as will practical applications.
